The significance of bringing both parties together to provide this facility, brings us back to our shared ambitions and desire to make positive impact.

Matthew Clayton, Managing Director of Thrive Renewables, said:

“We believe that funding partnerships like this can help catalyse the industry, accelerating the delivery of vital new renewable energy capacity at the pace and scale needed for net zero. We’re excited to be partnering with Eden Sustainable, a business that closely aligns with our ethos and values, helping fund its expansion plans that could see up to 75MW of new rooftop solar installed by the end of 2030.

“This also supports our own ambitious growth goals, with the aim to double Thrive’s generation capacity within the next five years. The clean energy system of the future will need to rely on a number of technologies working together, with private wire projects enabling more renewables to be deployed at a time when access to the grid is at a real bottleneck.”

Scott Burrows, Director and Co-Founder of Eden Sustainable, comments:

“Steve Baker and I founded Eden 10 years ago to decarbonise our building stock by providing solutions which worked for both power users and investors. It is fantastically exciting to supercharge this provision by working with Thrive, a brilliant and aligned company, to create real scale, and real impact. Thrive and Eden’s combined experience and ambition will help accelerate the deployment of commercial and industrial solar in support of the UK’s net zero commitments, while the deal has also helped turn us into a niche independent power producer, which is a natural evolution of Eden’s growth strategy.

Manchester’s Eden schools turn on solar power

Eden Boys and Girls Schools Manchester

Star Academies multi-academy trust (MAT) has installed solar pv on the roofs of two of its schools in Manchester. Eden Boys’ Leadership Academy, Manchester and Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy, Manchester, which are located on a shared campus in the Cheetham Hill area, each now hosts a 103kWp solar pv array on its rooftop.

The solar install has been project managed by Identity Consult, who in turn, appointed Eden Sustainable as the EPC contractor following a competitive tender.

Each school’s solar array will generate nearly 88,000 kWh/year and this equates to 38% of all the energy used by the schools. The project has been self-funded with a payback return forecast within 4 years.

The schools will use 78% of all the solar energy generated, and the remainder that is generated will be sold back to the grid. Most importantly, approximately 42 tonnes of CO2 will be saved annually by each school.

Each solar array comprises 226x JA 455W solar panels and a Solis 80kW inverter. The flat roofs required a Van der Valk ballasted mounting frame.

The same project team led by Eden Sustainable has just completed a third Eden school install at Eden Boys’ Leadership Academy, Birmingham East.

Eden Girls School Manchester

David Holland, Executive Director: Capital & Infrastructure at Star Academies, commented ‘’It is wonderful to see progress on our net zero carbon journey and to have these two schools self-generating much of their electricity, helping the Trust to save money and carbon, and provide energy security. My thanks to the project teams at Identity Consult and Eden Sustainable for making this a reality.”

Matthew Little, Procurement Manager at Star Academies, said “This project continues Star Academies’ great work on our net zero journey and we are excited to continue this with the help of our framework partners.”

Matthew Pendergast, Senior Director at Identity Consult, commented “after all the preparation, it is a great feeling to see this project completed. With our continued involvement in multiple carbon reduction schemes across the country Identity Consult have established an IC Zero arm of the company to focus on encouraging and facilitating future schemes like this one to help clients meet their Net Zero targets.”

Scott Burrows, Director at Eden Sustainable remarked “Absolutely brilliant that one Eden can help another Eden! Solar is such a powerful visible beacon of renewable energy; it can help disseminate the critical net zero message to a school’s community and encourage sustainability champions of the future. The education sector is dear to my heart, so a huge thanks to Star Academies for joining the cause.”

Eden Sustainable powering Uniserve’s Felixstowe Mega Distribution Centre with solar brilliance

Eden Sustainable is working with the UK’s No1 logistics and global trade management provider, Uniserve, to install a 2.5MW solar array at its impressive 750,000 sq ft Felixstowe Mega Distribution Centre (FMDC).

Uniserve partnered Eden Sustainable and Solar Solutions to implement the solar panel installation, which is set to revolutionise the FMDC's energy consumption and significantly reduce its carbon footprint.

Installation commenced in June 2023 and is due to reach completion by the end of the year. It will consist of 5,500 photovoltaic panels strategically positioned across the FMDC's vast rooftop, with a remarkable peak output of 2.5 MW of clean, renewable energy.

This pioneering endeavour represents a £2 million pound investment into sustainability, demonstrating Uniserve's continued commitment to environmental responsibility and a greener future.

Felixstowe Mega Distribution Centre

Uniserve’s Felixstowe Mega Distribution Centre

This generation of green electricity will empower Uniserve to achieve an impressive level of off grid electricity, overall providing 26% of its annual electricity demand.

Notably, Uniserve’s “Powerhouse" is projected to save a staggering 507,927 kg of CO2 each year, equivalent to the weight of 42 London buses.

The solar panels' exceptional power generation capabilities will facilitate a significant reduction in the FMDC's reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Uniserve foresees that the solar system will generate over 2,180,000 kWh per year, of which 86% of the energy will be consumed on site, supporting the operational needs of the facility.

Furthermore, the project will contribute to the grid, exporting an estimated 320,000 kWh of surplus power, enabling Uniserve to share its commitment to sustainable practices further afield with the local community of Felixstowe.

Vincent Morris, Property Director at Uniserve said "with the installation of these solar panels at our Felixstowe Mega Distribution Centre, Uniserve is taking a giant stride towards our commitment to reach net zero by 2050".

"We are proud to partner with Eden Sustainable and Solar Solutions in this transformative endeavour, reaffirming our commitment to environmental stewardship and reducing our environmental impact. This innovative solar project aligns with our company's core values, demonstrating that business and sustainability can go hand in hand for the benefit of the planet and our stakeholders."

Gareth Williams, Head of Business Development at Eden Sustainable said “we are delighted to be working with Uniserve on this exciting project at FMDC. We see this as a real statement in the industrial and logistics rooftop solar arena”.

How to choose the right solar developer?

Eden Sustainable commercial solar installation

Eden Sustainable commercial solar installation

Solar power is a rapidly growing industry in the UK, with more and more households, businesses, and utility companies adopting this renewable energy source. When considering what is the right company to work with, it is important to understand what scale your solar project falls in to. Below, we will discuss the different sizes of solar arrays, ranging from residential to utility scale

Residential Scale

>30kWp

Residential solar arrays are designed to provide energy to households. This would normally consist of a few modules on a rooftop or in a garden. The primary focus is to reduce grid energy consumption which will save the homeowner money whilst reducing their carbon footprint. This is more popular with the ever-growing popularity of electric vehicles.

Commercial Scale

30kWp-999kWp ca. 200-7000 sqm

Commercial solar arrays are designed to provide energy to businesses or organizations. These arrays tend to be much larger than residential systems and can consist of hundreds of solar panels mounted on rooftops, car parks, or ground mounted on site or nearby. Commercial solar arrays are suitable for businesses that want to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, improve their environmental credentials and hedge against rising electricity prices which have been prevalent in the past year.

Industrial Scale

700kWp – 5,000kWp ca. 5500sqm- 100,000 sqm

Industrial solar arrays are designed to provide energy to large industrial facilities such as production facilities, warehouses, and packaging plants. These arrays are typically much larger than commercial arrays and can consist of multiple thousands of solar panels mounted on large sheds and nearby open plots of land. Industrial solar arrays are suitable for companies with high energy demands 1GWh and above, that want to improve their energy security through a long-term energy strategy and wish to gain financial security against rapid price changes in the energy market. These businesses are also seeing increasing pressure from their supply chains to demonstrate their commitment to decarbonizing their processes.

Utility Scale

5000kWp+ ca. 100,000 sqm+

Rather than directly wiring to where the energy will be used, utility-scale solar arrays are designed to provide energy to the national grid. These arrays are the largest of solar arrays, consisting of tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of ground mounted solar panels, which you will have seen when travelling around the country. Whilst typically owned and operated by energy providers, utility-scale solar arrays are also suitable for companies that want to invest in large-scale renewable energy generation but don’t necessarily have the space on site to accommodate enough solar generation. These arrays can also provide a stable, long-term source of income for the owner through exporting to the grid.

When looking for a provider, it is important to understand what your end goal is to establish who is suitable to help you reach it. Often this is driven by the size of your array and the funding option you wish to choose.

Eden sustainable specialize in large scale commercial and industrial solar. Which is anything from 300kWp+. We offer a range of different finance options including £0 upfront cost, off balance sheet, Power Purchase Agreements (PPA). We have industry leading support from end to end covering initial feasibility, through legals, installation and ongoing operation and maintenance.

If you would like to discuss your options, please contact us.

Let's Go Zero supports schools by helping them to establish realistic goals and developing actionable roadmaps to bring these targets to fruition. They also work with the government to ensure that adequate resources are in place to enable schools to be 'zero carbon by 2030'.

There are already 954 schools who are a part of the campaign, with this number increasing rapidly. Please visit the link below to find out more.

1.6MW rooftop solar extension completed for Xtratherm

We are delighted with the outcome of this impressive 1.6MW addition to the rooftop solar project that we’ve developed for Xtratherm, a market leading insulation manufacturer, part of the UNILIN group.

Xtratherm has been an incredibly proactive partner throughout the journey which shows how seriously it is taking its pledge to use 100% renewably sourced electricity by 2025. On top of having a positive impact on the planet by drastically reducing its carbon footprint, it will also be making significant financial savings from its rooftop solar array.

Keep an eye out for more from this project, but in the meantime we would like to thank the Xtratherm team who we have had a close working relationship for 6 years, as well as Zestec, Aniron and Direct Electrical.

Eden sponsors sustainability stage and is shortlisted for the contractor of the year award at Education Estates 2021

Now in its 9th year, the Education Estates Awards is a 2-day annual gathering bringing together professionals across the Education community.

Its aim is to discover new ways to transform and refine internal and external learning environments into sustainable spaces fit for the future.

Education Estates covers areas such as the design, construction, management, maintenance and funding of education spaces, with a particular emphasis on sustainability.

Although we didn’t win the award this year, Eden were delighted to have been shortlisted for the contractor of the year award with <£50 million annual turnover.

We proudly sponsored the sustainability stand, alongside BCR Associates, where Scott Burrows spoke with both John Barneby FRSA of Oasis Community Learning and Steve Bolt.

LAUNCHING 2021 – EDEN GROWS AMIDST THE CHALLENGING COVID BACKDROP

It all begins with an idea.

2020 was a difficult year for planet earth, Covid has touched every single one of us, but thankfully Eden has navigated this and continued its strategic growth handsomely.  A successful refinance at the heart of lockdown, a new strategic funding relationship and a marked increase in deal flow.  As we head into 2021 we will have added 30% to our staff resources and all the signs are we are heading for an excellent year.  Taking stock, Eden believe in building key relationships, and retaining them, in order to deploy as much solar as possible.  Eden focus on private wire ‘behind the meter’ solar, but are also involved in utility scale projects backed by other revenue models.  Eden are developing, constructing and funding exciting projects with growth across Multinational, Multi-Academy Trusts and SME sectors.

Iron Mountain UK Solar Rooftop Programme

During 2020 Eden successfully completed phase one of deployment of PPA solar for Iron Mountain’s UK Estate. This comprised 8 industrial buildings of suitable UK owner occupied sites for the huge US Multinational, and are now working hard on the remainder, as we help them achieve their RE100 carbon reduction goals, and create sustainable long term impact investments.  Eden are incredibly proud of our success in liaising with its key partner Aniron and all parts of the Iron Mountain team, across the US and UK, to deliver this roll out and achieve shared goals.

Oasis Community Learning

Eden Sustainable is delighted to partner with Oasis Community Learning, one of the largest Multi Academy Trusts in the UK, and are due on site for the first of the 14 schools which have been approved for solar in early March.

Oasis are taking fantastic steps and genuinely trailblazing in carbon reduction and the broader sustainability piece. Solar in schools is a powerful tool for not only direct carbon reduction, but dissemination of sustainability and the climate change message to the broader community. Oasis has 30,000 students and 5000 staff so this is a fantastic game changer.

Scott Burrows, co-founder and Director of Eden, sits on the Oasis Sustainability Working Group. He remarks “Clearly Covid-19 has dramatically affected the way we have lived our lives for the last few months, but the fantastic thing is it has also sharpened the focus on Sustainability at Oasis. We are delighted to help Oasis achieve its goals by developing and funding its solar roll out. Solar is just one of a suite of sustainable energy measures; but it is a potent and visible flagship that helps spread the message to the Oasis Community.”

John Barneby, COO, Oasis Community Learning, “We believe that the Education sector has a responsibility to raise awareness and empower future generations to ensure the sustainability of our planet”.

Xtratherm UK Ltd, part of the Unilin and Mohawk group

Back in 2016 Eden constructed a 500kW solar array on this Multinationals UK site.  2021 sees Eden extend the solar array to a total of 2.15MW. Xtratherm is a large consumer of power, whose energy efficiency product base is well aligned with Eden’s mission.

SMEs

The solar provision is increasingly attractive for Small to Medium Sized Enterprises.  In this post subsidy era we are seeing exceptional growth in demand, as businesses increasingly expect to assess their own energy needs with a cost savings and carbon savings lens. High consumers of power with large roofs are increasingly considering solar as a commodity, in the same as they look at their energy bills. Eden and its network of channel partners across the UK work hard to provide an accessible and market leading solution for either Fully funded, or self funded solar.

The Pickwell Foundation

The Pickwell foundation (part of the broader Eden group) has continued to make grants in the areas of  displaced people and climate change. We are delighted that despite Covid, it’s work has continued and over £200k of grants have been made in 2020.

‘As we enter 2021 it is great to see that despite a UK lockdown, so many companies are looking at how they can reduce the climate impact of their activities by installing renewables. We are excited to be at the forefront of this work in reducing UK carbon emissions as we go through this huge energy transition’ says Steve Baker, Chairman, and Co-founder of Eden and the Pickwell Foundation.
