Our solar canopy installation at North Devon Hospice has been shortlisted for the Alan Clark Award for Local/Community Energy at the Solar & Storage Live Awards 2026. The awards ceremony takes place on 22 September at the Vox, Birmingham.

This is recognition of a project that has mattered from the start.

What the North Devon Hospice Installation Involved

The North Devon Hospice project is a 101 kWp solar photovoltaic system installed across 32 car park bays using solar canopy structures, alongside integrated EV charging infrastructure. Eden Sustainable served as principal contractor throughout. SIG Building Solutions supplied the canopy structures: two UK-manufactured Double Mono units that form the backbone of the installation.

The site presented real engineering challenges. Significant sloping topography across the car park ruled out the original canopy layout. Rather than trying to make the standard solution fit, the team redesigned it from scratch, working closely with SIG Building Solutions to develop a bespoke Double Mono configuration that maximised solar generation while keeping the car park fully operational.

Installations on active hospice sites require a different kind of care. There are patients and families on site. The phasing, noise management, and access planning all had to reflect that. Throughout the build, disruption to patients, visitors, and staff was kept to an absolute minimum.

Why the Alan Clark Award Matters for This Project

The Alan Clark Award for Local/Community Energy recognises renewable energy projects that deliver lasting, real-world benefits to communities and community-focused organisations. North Devon Hospice sits squarely in that category.

The hospice provides specialist palliative care to patients and their families across North Devon. It runs on charitable donations and community fundraising. The solar installation is forecast to save the hospice around £15,000 per year in energy costs. For a charity operating in this way, those savings have a direct impact: £15,000 per year that can go into nursing, into specialist support services, into the care the hospice exists to provide.

That is what the shortlisting reflects. Not just a technically sound installation, but one where the output genuinely matters to the people it serves.
