The Challenge
XR Training has trained apprentices across South Wales since 1992 from its centre on Village Farm Industrial Estate in Pyle, near Bridgend. Its courses run from welding and fabrication to electrical engineering and motor vehicle maintenance, which means workshops full of equipment drawing power through the training day. With electricity prices climbing, the business needed to bring that cost down without diverting capital from the workshops, tools and tutors its learners rely on.
The Solution
Eden Sustainable designed and installed a 154 kWp rooftop solar PV system on the Pyle training centre, delivered under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). XR Training paid nothing for the installation and buys the electricity the panels generate at an agreed rate below its grid tariff. Eden managed the design, the grid connection application with National Grid Electricity Distribution and commissioning, and the system has been generating since October 2022.
The Outcome
XR Training now saves around £30,000 a year on electricity and avoids 71 tonnes of CO₂ annually. For a training provider, that’s money that goes back into workshops, equipment and learners rather than the energy bill. No capital was spent, and the savings started the day the system switched on.
