The Challenge
Roba Metals is part of a family-owned European metals group founded in 1937, and its UK recycling centre sits on the Arden Forest Industrial Estate in Alcester, Warwickshire. There it buys industrial production scrap from factories across the UK, then checks, sorts and processes aluminium, copper, brass, stainless steel, zinc and nickel ready for recycling.
Handling metal at that scale, including an on-site baling facility, uses a lot of electricity. Roba wanted to cut that cost and the carbon behind it, adding to the environmental benefit that recycling already brings.
The Solution
Eden Sustainable designed and delivered a 334 kWp rooftop solar PV system at the Alcester site. Roba funded the project itself as a capital investment, so it owns the system outright and keeps every pound of saving it produces.
Eden managed the full project, from design and the grid connection to installation and commissioning, working around a busy recycling yard that kept operating throughout.
The Outcome
The system now saves Roba Metals around £102,000 a year on electricity and avoids 54 tonnes of CO₂ annually. For a business built on recycling, it means the metal it processes is now handled partly with clean power generated on its own roof.
Because the system is self-funded, every unit generated on site is protected from future rises in grid prices.
