The Challenge
Motus Commercials is the UK’s largest independent commercial vehicle dealer group and the biggest DAF Trucks dealer group in the world. Its Gloucester dealership opened on Spinnaker Road in 2019, a three-acre site supplying DAF trucks and Fiat Professional vans.
A truck dealership is a working site first and a showroom second. Workshop bays, lifting equipment, parts stores and offices draw power throughout the working day, and the bills arrive whatever the state of new vehicle sales. Motus needed to cut the cost of running the site without slowing an aftersales operation that customers rely on to keep their fleets on the road.
The Solution
Eden Sustainable designed and delivered a 190 kWp rooftop solar PV system at Motus Commercials Gloucester. The 376 panels sit on rails fixed through the crowns of the profiled metal roof sheets, the high points where water doesn’t collect. Motus funded the installation directly as a capital project, so the system is a group-owned asset rather than a contract with a third-party funder.
The works were planned around a live dealership, with a specialist installation team on site for around five weeks in spring 2024. A Heras-fenced compound to the south-east of the building kept materials, welfare and the telehandler clear of workshop traffic. Deliveries followed the dealership’s existing vehicle routes, and access routes stayed clear throughout. Eden handled structural checks, system design and the grid connection application with National Grid Electricity Distribution, including the DNO witness test at commissioning.
The Outcome
The Gloucester system now saves Motus Commercials £43,500 a year on electricity and avoids 33 tonnes of CO₂ annually. That is a strong return from 190 kWp of roof space, and because Motus owns the system, all of it stays with the business.
For a group with more than 30 locations across the UK, Gloucester also provides something a proposal can’t. It gives Motus measured generation and savings from one of its own dealerships, a real benchmark for judging solar across the rest of the estate.
