The Challenge
Hodgetts Farm sits on Pegg Lane, just outside the village of Elford in rural Staffordshire, a few miles north of Tamworth. Like most working farms, it relies on electricity through the day, and rising grid prices were adding a growing cost to the business.
The farm wanted to generate its own power from the buildings it already had, cutting both its bills and its carbon footprint, without the system becoming another job to manage.
The Solution
Eden Sustainable designed and installed a 42 kWp rooftop solar PV system on the farm’s pitched metal roof, made up of 92 high-efficiency 455W panels. The farm funded the project itself as a capital investment, so it owns the system outright and keeps every pound of saving it produces.
The array feeds a single Solis 30kW inverter, set up with export limitation so the system works within the capacity of the local grid connection. That meant the farm could install a system sized to its roof and its needs, rather than one cut down to fit the network. Eden managed the full project, from design and the grid connection with National Grid Electricity Distribution to installation and commissioning. The system has been generating since 2022.
The Outcome
The system now saves Hodgetts Farm around £6,000 a year on electricity and avoids 7.5 tonnes of CO₂ annually. With no ongoing fuel costs and very little to maintain, it’s a straightforward investment that keeps paying back year after year.
Every unit generated on the farm is protected from future rises in grid prices.
