The Challenge
Ede & Ravenscroft, founded in 1689 and the oldest firm of robe makers and tailors in the world, has long balanced its distinguished heritage with a forward-looking approach to business. With energy costs representing a significant and growing operational overhead across its portfolio of UK premises, the business sought a commercially viable route to reducing its electricity spend and demonstrating credible environmental leadership.
The specific challenge centred on two commercial rooftop sites, each presenting their own structural and logistical considerations. Eden Sustainable was engaged to assess both roofs, design a system that would maximise generation capacity within the available footprint, and deliver a seamless installation that caused minimal disruption to day-to-day operations.
Beyond the financial imperative, Ede & Ravenscroft recognised the reputational and strategic value of a verifiable, measurable commitment to sustainability, one that could be reported against ESG targets and communicated meaningfully to clients, stakeholders, and employees.
The Solution
Eden Sustainable designed and installed a 130 kilowatt peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) system split across both rooftops. The system was engineered to optimise panel orientation and capacity on each roof individually, ensuring the combined installation delivered maximum annual energy generation for the site.
The project involved a full technical survey of both buildings prior to design, followed by a detailed generation modelling exercise to provide Ede & Ravenscroft with accurate forecasts of energy output, cost savings, and carbon reduction. Every stage from structural assessment and DNO application through to commissioning and handover, was managed end-to-end by the Eden Sustainable team.
Installation was carefully planned and phased to protect the operational continuity of the premises, with works completed safely, on schedule, and in full compliance with all relevant UK electrical standards and building regulations.
The Outcome
The completed 130 kWp solar system is now generating clean, renewable electricity directly from the rooftops of both sites. The energy produced offsets grid consumption in real time, reducing the amount of electricity Ede & Ravenscroft needs to purchase from its supplier throughout the year.
The system is projected to deliver an average annual saving of £24,000, a figure that will compound favourably as grid electricity prices continue to rise over the asset's 25-year operational lifespan. Across that period, the cumulative financial benefit is expected to exceed £600,000, placing this installation firmly in the category of a high-return, long-term capital investment rather than simply an environmental initiative.
On the sustainability side, the system displaces 24,104 kilograms of CO₂ from the grid every year. This is equivalent to taking more than 13 petrol-powered cars off the road annually, and represents a meaningful, independently verifiable contribution to Ede & Ravenscroft's carbon reduction goals.
The dual-roof configuration ensures that generation is diversified across the estate, providing resilience and maximising output across different times of day and seasonal conditions.
The Results
System capacity: 130 kWp across two commercial rooftops
Annual energy cost saving: £24,000 (average)
Annual CO₂ saving: 24,104 kg — equivalent to removing approximately 13 cars from the road each year
Projected lifetime financial benefit: In excess of £600,000 over 25 years
Operational disruption: Minimal — installation phased and managed to protect business continuity
Compliance: Full UK electrical standards, DNO approval, and building regulation compliance throughout
