The Challenge
Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust provided mental health services across three north London boroughs, with Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield as one of its main sites. Its successor, North London NHS Foundation Trust, provides community and mental health services across Barnet, Enfield, Haringey, Camden and Islington, and runs Chase Farm Hospital alongside St Pancras and St Ann’s.
Mental health inpatient services run around the clock, and every pound spent on electricity is a pound that isn’t spent on patient care. Like every NHS trust, the Trust also faced a clear national target to reach net zero. It needed a way to cut both its energy costs and its carbon emissions, using its own estate.
The Solution
Eden Sustainable designed and delivered a 96 kWp rooftop solar PV system at Chase Farm Hospital. The Trust funded the project as a capital investment, so the system belongs to the NHS outright and every pound of saving stays with the Trust.
The system is made up of 208 JA Solar 460W panels feeding four Solis inverters, with generation metered across four separate supplies so the output goes where the hospital uses it. Working on a live healthcare site meant planning every stage around patient safety and the hospital’s daily operation. Eden managed the design, the grid connection with UK Power Networks, installation and commissioning.
The Outcome
The system now saves around £21,000 a year on electricity and avoids 20 tonnes of CO₂ annually. For an NHS trust, that’s a saving that can go back into frontline care, along with a measurable cut in carbon it can report against its net zero commitments.
Because the system is self-funded, the Trust keeps every unit generated on site, protected from future rises in grid prices for the life of the panels. The site now continues under North London NHS Foundation Trust.
