As more UK businesses consider installing solar energy to reduce operational costs and to meet sustainability targets, a common question arises: how long do commercial solar panels last? With solar now a very established technology, most systems are designed to operate efficiently for 25 years or more, unlocking long-term value and energy savings for businesses.

This short guide explains the typical lifespan of commercial solar panels; the warranties involved; and how to ensure your system performs over the long term.

Typical Lifespan of Commercial Solar Panels

Commercial solar panels are generally built to last 25 to 30 years, with many systems expected to continue to generate electricity well beyond that timeframe. While output naturally declines over time (typically at a rate of around 0.5% per year), a high-quality panel may still operate at 85-88% of its original performance after 25 years.

This long-term durability and minimal maintenance make commercial solar installations a worthwhile investment, with immediate energy cost savings and a typical return on investment within 7 to 10 years (sometimes as low as 5 years). Renewable energy is not just cleaner energy, it’s also cheaper energy.

Warranties and Manufacturer Support

When investing in a commercial solar installation, it's essential to choose installers who work with high-quality equipment and trusted manufacturers. This ensures your system is backed by strong product warranties (typically 10 to 12 years), with some extending up to 25 years, covering defects in materials or workmanship.

At Eden, we only install high quality products and components with a record for reliability and long-term manufacturing support. In addition, our Operations & Maintenance (O&M) services offer ongoing support and guidance, helping you navigate warranty claims, performance issues, and system optimisation throughout the life of your installation.

Installer Support and Ongoing Maintenance

One of the key benefits of working with a professional installer is the long-term support available after installation. At Eden, we offer two types of commercial projects: self-funded supply and install (Capex) and funded (PPA) – which you can find out more about PPAs here.

All Capex projects include a two-year workmanship warranty, during which the system is monitored by our internal O&M team. Call-outs during this time are chargeable unless the issue is related to workmanship and falls within the warranty period.

Clients do have the option from completion and commissioning of the installation to take out a comprehensive O&M contract. This includes daily monitoring, annual health inspections, system alerts, and reactive visits – all alongside other services and maintenance processes, such as system optimisation, performance reporting and remote diagnostics.

Annual System Inspections

During an annual system inspection each project undergoes testing to analyse system performance and string (array) output, alongside a full check of all components, including inverters, wiring, mounting, and safety equipment. A detailed report is then issued, noting any faults, deterioration, or system inefficiencies.

These inspections are strongly recommended to maintain the long-term health of your solar installation, prevent potential faults, and protect against costly future repairs or energy losses.

System Cleaning for Peak Performance

Cleaning is an essential part of solar maintenance. At Eden, we quote for cleaning as part of our O&M offering and assess the condition of each system during the annual inspection.

Keeping panels free from dirt, dust, bird droppings and other debris helps ensure your system operates at maximum efficiency and extends the lifespan of the installation.

System Design and Installation Quality

The longevity and performance of any commercial solar system also depend heavily on design and installation quality. A properly assessed and professionally installed system is less likely to encounter structural issues or performance degradation over time. At Eden, our engineers ensure every installation is tailored to the unique requirements of the building and its energy profile.

Powering a more sustainable future.

Commercial solar panels represent a durable, cost-effective solution for UK businesses aiming to lower energy costs and reduce carbon emissions. With systems designed to last 25 years or more, supported by product warranties, ongoing O&M services, and routine inspections, solar is a worthwhile investment. Whether through a Capex or funded (PPA) model, partnering with a trusted provider like Eden ensures your solar system delivers reliable performance and long-term savings.

Investing in commercial solar panels can be a wise financial move for many businesses. The reduction in annual electricity costs provides a clear financial benefit, which is enhanced by a range of further commercial benefits. At Eden, all of our system designs look at these factors and we ensure that we capture these in any proposal we make to you.
